"The Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles and Clothing is named in honor of Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility and of weaving. It is private non-profit institution founded in 1977.

"Its mission is to collect, document, rescue and exhibit Guatemala's indigenous textile patrimony as well as to educate others about it. We emphasize its cultural, technical and artistic value. Our vision is to remain as leaders in the field of development and to contribute to the awareness and sharing of Guatemala's cultural wealth.

"Our main collection consists of 7,801 pieces of clothing and weavings from 147 municipalities and 34 villages, and represents 181 communities. Our textiles date from the late 1800s and early 1900s to the present day.

"As a part of our work, the Ixchel Museum is also a research center for the study of weaving and of traditional Maya dress. We launched our research program in 1983 through field work and bibliographical research. The purpose is to come to know the evolution of Maya apparel of different communities and the textile processes used to create it.

"The result of this research serves as the basis for mounting textile exhibits. It is also available in publications that contribute to the field of Guatemalan ethnography, particularly, the Maya culture."
