Jose Manuel Fernandez
“My name is Jose Manuel Fernandez. I was born in San Miguel Sarapiqui in Alajuela, Costa Rica in 1971. I grew up with my parents and grandparents, who were farmers. I consider myself an honest, hardworking and reliable person. I enjoy sharing my free time with my family.

“I started in art due to a job crisis, because I needed to support my family. For 6 years I have worked with handicrafts as a family business. I learned to make the products on my own; it is a gift that God has given me. I remember that my first piece was a coffee root drip; I sold it, and to this day I continue to make these products. It inspires me to see customers excited about our products, and I was attracted to being able to help others through our art.

“We make coffee drippers inspired by the country, as it has been part of our culture for many years. I make them with sustainable wood from the coffee trunk; others sand them, pack them and make the cloth bags. Our products do not harm the environment.

“I have gone through many difficult moments, such as not having enough to eat with my family. In these moments, with perseverance, God has helped me to get ahead, and today I am proud to have overcome it. I hope to financially support my family and help other families.

“It has been difficult to establish myself as an artisan without any training or someone to help us move forward faster. We want to give you the opportunity to get to know our products, as we hope to improve and thus provide even better quality products, transmitting our Costa Rican culture to the whole world.”
