'Our inspiration for this necklace was the United Nations Rose of Peace — 'the most beautiful rose in the world,'' artisans from the Jalapa Girl Jewelsmiths Association confide. 'In 1935, Francis Meilland was able to cultivate a 'simple rose.' He never imagined that, years later, it would become a symbol of peace around the world.
'This rose received its name in Pasadena on the day the Berlin Wall fell, with this message. 'May this rose influence everyone of good will for the creation of a fair and lasting peace.'
'This rose bloomed when the world was experiencing difficult times of great violence and suffering. Yet it has survived everywhere it's been cultivated, and continues to flourish as a true symbol of triumph. In Italy, it's known as Gioia, which means 'happiness.' In Germany, it's called Gloria Dei, meaning 'Glory of God.' Both names evoke peace and tranquility.'
