The Lopez Garcia Family of artisans from Guatemala handcrafts a set of four ornaments made from recycled materials. The artisans remove the inner workings of spent light bulbs and fill them with handmade worry dolls created from recycled pinewood and brightly colored recycled fabric. Eight dolls are placed in each light bulb, which is then capped with a cork disc recycled from wine bottles. The ornaments hang from silver-colored nylon cord.
Guatemalan worry dolls honor the legend of Mayan princess Ixmucané, who was given the gift of solving people's problems. Today, people still craft tiny dolls made in her honor, telling one worry to each doll in the hope the burden of the problem can be lifted from their shoulders.
